BLM Geographpic Coordinate Data Base
Award: 2012 ACEC-Montana Engineering Excellence Award in Surveying and Mapping Technology
The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) initiated the Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB) project to digitally portray the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Premier Data Services was hired as the prime contractor. As a sub to Premier Data Services, Morrison-Maierle provided surveying services to complete the systematic corner collection for the Montana part of the project. The GCDB solution utilized the cadastral record as the spatial framework for a multi-purpose cadastre. The measurement-based strategy anticipates future surveys with the construction of templates, which catalogue the rules of survey that apply to a data set.
Morrison-Maierle assisted Premier Data Services in the development of the technical procedures for corner collection. These procedures became the standard for all of the states surveyed.
In Montana, Morrison-Maierle’s survey crews prepared in advance for their field work with thorough research and successfully located monuments over 100 years old. While the project is ongoing in other states, Montana’s accurate township database is available online and will help aid in the development of renewable energy within the national system of public lands.
