Stillwater Refinery Survey
Morrison-Maierle was contracted by Stillwater Mining Company to conduct a survey-grade scan of the furnace area of their Refinery Building. The furnace area is comprised of two furnaces (EF1 and EF2) that are 30-feet high brick clad pieces of equipment that are surrounded by seven levels of platforms interconnected by multiple stairwells.
Because of the line-of-sight blockage created by the furnaces themselves and the existence of seven independent levels in the area, 68 discreet set-ups were required to get the coverage needed for the scan. The scan was completed over the course of three days and was rendered into a 3D model by stitching the individual scans into one file.
The scan included a point cloud made up of millions of points and photographic images of the entire area. The scan was used to evaluate deformation in structural support steel due to the high temperature of the steam and vapors emitted from the furnaces.
