canal to pipeline conversions

Seven Benefits of Converting Canals to Pipelines

Seven Benefits of Converting Canals to Pipelines By Gary Vert, PE, CFM – Completing canal to pipeline conversion projects can be challenging for irrigation districts throughout the western United States. Many districts are looking for ways to conserve water, improve efficiency, and modernize their water delivery system. While irrigation districts may be able to address these needs by lining their canals, it may be more beneficial to convert your canal into a pipeline instead. From our experience, there are seven major advantages to this solution. The truth is that many irrigation systems are old, with deteriorating infrastructure that needs to be repaired or more often, replaced. BecauseRead More →

Oregon Creek Stream Restoration

Oregon Creek Stream Restoration Since 2014, the Big Hole Watershed Committee (BHWC) and a dozen funding partners have invested significant time and energy into improving conditions of the French Creek drainage, a major tributary to the Big Hole River. Restoration projects in adjacent tributaries, and a nearbySuperfund site, have worked toward reducing sediment, improving hydrology and function, and supporting native fish refugia. The latest project is in the lower reach of Oregon Creek. Oregon Creek was damaged by historic placer mining activities and as a result, is listed on Montana Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) List of Impaired Waters for its sedimentation/siltation problems. Do I Have Enough Water? 3 Steps for Measuring Irrigation Ditch Flow

Do I Have Enough Water? 3 Steps for Measuring Irrigation Ditch Flow  By Wyatt Hatch, PE – Am I getting enough water? This may be the most frequent question agricultural water users ask during irrigation season.   Irrigators depend on efficient systems to provide water when it’s needed, not to mention making sure their water rights are fulfilled. Agricultural irrigation systems are typically supplied from surface water that is often times delivered through an open channel ditch. Using open channel flow measurement is an effective way to understand whether you’re getting enough water.  If you have the right equipment, open channel flow measurement is straightforward, effective, and needs little time and effort to perform. AfterRead More →

Deep Creek Canyon Segments A and B Accelerated Bridge Construction

Deep Creek Canyon Segments A and B Accelerated Bridge Construction Awards:  2015 America’s Transportation Award – Best Use of Innovation Regional Award; 2015 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Montana, Structural Systems (including bridges) Category; 2014 APWA Rocky Mountain Chapter Project of the Year Award; High flows during the 2011 spring runoff resulted in significant erosion of the US Highway 12 embankment and damaged bridges crossing Deep Creek. The subsequent flooding required emergency maintenance to prevent structural loss, and triggered a project to replace three bridges in the initial phase of a three-phase construction program. After careful analysis, the Montana Department ofRead More →
