American Indian Hall

American Indian Hall Morrison-Maierle worked with ThinkOne, a local Bozeman architect, to perform the structural design and site civil design for this unique building located on the Malone Centennial Mall at MSU. This $20M, 31,000 sq. ft. building was funded through donor gifts. It is the first in Montana to obtain LEED Platinum v4 status (video below), earning all three points in the structural materials category plus one additional point for exemplary structural performance. The building system is a combination of wood and steel, and there were several unique architectural features including a curved monumental staircase, curved canopies, a drum room, and a 140 ft.Read More →

wastewater lagoon design morrison maierle

Staying Safe: Design Solutions for Sewage Lagoons

Staying Safe: Design Solutions for Sewage Lagoons By Rika Lashley, PE – One of the first things that comes to mind when designing a new or rehabilitated lagoon is treatment capacity. As engineers we often focus on functionality first. However, equally important is the ability to safely construct, operate, and maintain the facility. Addressing lagoon safety measures early during design can also help during construction and installation of the lagoon liner and equipment. There are several elements that can be incorporated into the design of a new lagoon (or installed during the upgrade of an existing lagoon) to facilitate safe access where needed and assistanceRead More →

billings interceptor project morrison maierle

Billings Interceptor

Billings Interceptor The City of Billings, particularly its West End, is one the state’s fastest growing communities in Montana. Keeping future expansions and its current infrastructure in mind, the city determined that it was time to upgrade its 1980s-era wastewater system. Based on their 2018 study, Morrison-Maierle designed a 4,735 linear-foot trenchless rehabilitation solution for this busy area’s 60-inch sanitary sewer interceptor main. Instead of tearing up streets, railroads, and pedestrian walkwaysto replace the whole pipe, they used the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) method to avoid open cut excavation as the project went through downtown, the railroad right-of-way, Highway 87, and a state superfund site. canal to pipeline conversions

Seven Benefits of Converting Canals to Pipelines

Seven Benefits of Converting Canals to Pipelines By Gary Vert, PE, CFM – Completing canal to pipeline conversion projects can be challenging for irrigation districts throughout the western United States. Many districts are looking for ways to conserve water, improve efficiency, and modernize their water delivery system. While irrigation districts may be able to address these needs by lining their canals, it may be more beneficial to convert your canal into a pipeline instead. From our experience, there are seven major advantages to this solution. The truth is that many irrigation systems are old, with deteriorating infrastructure that needs to be repaired or more often, replaced. BecauseRead More →

trenchless utility installation options

Why Trenchless Utility Installations Might Be Your Project’s Best Solution

Why Trenchless Utility Installations Might Be Your Project’s Best Solution By Mike Kynett, PE – Crossing existing roads, utilities, waterways, or other infrastructure with new utility installations can be challenging to permit. And in many cases, open-cut trenching may not be an option when crossing busy roadways. However, once that process is complete, selecting the most cost-effective way to install the crossings—and one that also complies with your project’s permit—is another challenge that municipalities face. A project’s schedule also may not fall into the timeframe required by the permit to perform an open-cut excavation across a waterway. Right-of-way or utility owners also may not allowRead More →

Moonlight Basin Wastewater Treatment Plant #2

It has skiing, golfing, and other outdoor activities as well as lodging, food and beverage, fitness/spa, and retail amenities. Moonlight Basin has an established water and sewer utility, but as a growing area, the owner needed additional wastewater treatment infrastructure. Moonlight Basin’s focus is to grow and develop in a sustainable way. With more expansion on the horizon and knowing that water-use options and resources are not plentiful in the area, they used information and recommendationsRead More →

Deer Lodge Wastewater Treatment Plant

Deer Lodge Wastewater Treatment Plant Like many small communities, Deer Lodge was faced with expensive improvements to their wastewater treatment facilities in order to come into compliance with stringent nutrient limits. Typically, this would involve upgrading their existing facility. However, unlike similar projects, numerous unusual challenges had to be overcome first including excessive infiltration into their collection system that was exceeding 2.5 million gallons per day. This was over five times the flow expected for the population. Requirement aside, working in the area itself proved to be the biggest challenge of all. The project engineers had to obtain a formal land exchange and a SpecialRead More →
