Kim Williams Trail Extension Project
Morrison-Maierle was hired by the City of Missoula to design the 0.22 mile-long segment of the Kim Williams Trail Extension Project connecting southwest Missoula to East Missoula. The funding source, a Community Transportation Enhancement Program grant, was contingent on fast approaching deadlines which provoked the City of Missoula to seek the completion of the project in very short order. In response to the time constraints, Morrison-Maierle proposed a plan founded on an accelerated design schedule, our technical experience with the trail system, and successful coordination with Montana Rail Link (MRL), Montana Department of Transportation, and local landowners.
The Morrison-Maierle design team was challenged with providing safe access for pedestrians under two Intersate-90 bridges as well as one MRL Bridge. Slope stabilization was also a critical component to the success of the design and, after considering several options, the final design focused on segmental retaining walls. Overhead protection beneath bridges, handrails, and fencing were all incorporated in the final design to enhance trail user safety and protect adjacent property. Additionally, the trail was designed to comply with ADA regulations.
Other work items included surveying, a geotechnical investigation, site civil engineering, and construction administration. The new trail extension was commissioned in June 2017.
