Refinery Fire Protection System Hydraulic Modeling Morrison-Maierle developed and analyzed a hydraulic model of the fire protection system for a refinery. The purpose of the model was to evaluate and determine whether or not the existing fire protection system met flow requirements and to make recommendations on upgrades to the system. AutoCAD drawings of existing fire mains, hydrants, and monitors were exported as Geographic Information System (GIS) files and used to create a hydraulic model. A hydrant flow testing plan was developed and implemented in order to properly calibrate the model. Stimson Lumber Company Fire Pump and Building Addition Morrison-Maierle was retained to design a fire pump and piping system in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidance document NFPA 20. It was needed to replace an existing system that was impacted by removal of the Milltown Dam. Stimson Lumber Company drilled and tested a new well capable of yielding in excess of 1.5 times the 2,000-gallons-per-minute design flow required by the fire pump system. The system consists of a 360-horsepower, diesel turbine pump.
