Morrison-Maierle provided mechanical, electrical, ICT, and fire protection engineering for the renovation of a 6,400-square-foot building into the new Double K Bar & General Store in downtown Missoula.
Working for LOCI Architecture + Design, the team helped transform an older two-level structure into a welcoming destination that includes a bar, dining area, kitchen, and an unfinished basement for future flexibility. This project brought new life to a historic building in downtown Missoula while supporting Double K Ranch’s continued expansion into the area’s market.
Double K Ranch has built its reputation on locally sourced, sustainably raised meats and opened its general store in downtown Missoula in 2025 as part of a broader growth strategy. This project, which came online in June 2026, helps them continue their growth and expansion in the area.
A key challenge was integrating modern building systems into an existing structure without compromising the architectural vision or the user experience. Morrison-Maierle designed HVAC systems using rooftop units, kitchen ventilation, and natural gas distribution to support restaurant operations while maintaining comfort throughout the space.
Plumbing design included domestic water, sanitary waste, and grease waste systems tailored to food service needs. Electrical engineering addressed lighting, power distribution, and fire alarm systems, while ICT services included structured cabling, video surveillance, and sound systems to support day-to-day operations and the overall customer experience.
Throughout design and construction, Morrison-Maierle coordinated closely with the architect and owner to align engineering systems with the project’s operational goals, schedule, and aesthetic character. The team participated in design meetings and supported permitting and construction through submittal reviews, responses to contractor questions, and site visits.
The result of this project is a thoughtfully engineered hospitality space that helps Double K Ranch extend its brand into a vibrant downtown setting. By balancing code compliance, performance, and adaptability in an existing building, the project demonstrates how integrated engineering can help clients reimagine older properties as distinctive, high-functioning community destinations.
