Doing the Right Thing? A Code of Ethics Can Help Guide Us By Craig Nowak, PE – With this being Infrastructure Week, it’s a good time to pause and think about how we practice our engineering profession and the boundaries we must keep as we work to build new infrastructure and improve upon the infrastructure we already use. Like most professional organizations, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has a code of ethics that ASCE members are expected to uphold in their professional duties. In a broader sense, these can be viewed as common sense rules by which engineers should conduct themselves whether orRead More →

Kim Williams Trail Extension Project

Kim Williams Trail Extension Project Morrison-Maierle was hired by the City of Missoula to design the 0.22 mile-long segment of the Kim Williams Trail Extension Project connecting southwest Missoula to East Missoula. The funding source, a Community Transportation Enhancement Program grant, was contingent on fast approaching deadlines which provoked the City of Missoula to seek the completion of the project in very short order. In response to the time constraints, Morrison-Maierle proposed a plan founded on an accelerated design schedule, our technical experience with the trail system, and successful coordination with Montana Rail Link (MRL), Montana Department of Transportation, and local landowners. I-90 Rockfall Design-Build Awards: 2014 Montana Contractors Association Best Reconstruction of a Rural Project Award and the 2015 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Montana, Special Projects Category In spring of 2013, unusually wet conditions caused several large rockslides along Interstate 90, which provides a vital means of transportation through the Rocky Mountains. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) was forced to close the westbound lanes and installed temporary containment rails. However, MDT knew this was a temporary fix and started a slope stabilization project. Sure enough, another slide a mile down the road followed suit a year later. DueRead More →
