Sheridan County Airport Terminal Building Rehabilitation and Expansion
Originally constructed in the 1940s, the Sheridan County Airport has been expanded seven times throughout its history. In the latest remodel, the Sheridan County Airport hired Morrison-Maierle and QC10 Architects to help with a rehabilitation and expansion project. This included designing two new additions and remodeling portions of the airport terminal.
To improve passenger flow throughout the terminal, the project updated the airline ticketing, baggage claim, and rental car counter areas.
With the new design, the car rental counters were relocated into the baggage carousel room to create a new corridor for deplaning passengers to access the baggage claim area while avoiding the airline ticketing area. Passenger congestion has been significantly reduced compared to the original layout of the airline ticketing and baggage claim areas.
To the southwest section of the building, we added an addition to allow space for airline equipment needed for baggage handling, as well as a new baggage carousel.
Before the update, TSA agents were forced to screen all checked luggage by hand. Now, the baggage belts feed into a TSA-installed CT-80 scanner to improve the overall outgoing baggage handling process.

External Improvements
When the old rental car counter area was demolished, a new entrance vestibule was constructed on the front of the terminal building. This creates a welcoming experience for passengers arriving at the airport.
Improving safety and functionality outside the building, the terminal passenger drop-off loop was reconfigured with new striping and additional signage. All sidewalks, curb and gutter, and paving were restored after the building was constructed. A raised crosswalk was installed at the terminal’s entrance for better visibility of walking passengers traveling to and from the building to parking lots.
Budget-Conscious and Efficient Design
As a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) project, the prime contractor was involved throughout the design and planning process. This kept the project on budget and helped the team avoid excessive change orders in the field.
As another cost-saving choice, we designed a firewall for the southwest addition to avoid having to add a fire sprinkler system to the entire terminal. Because of the many expansions over time, rerouting it with a complete fire suppression system would have cost several thousands of dollars more, potentially compromising the project’s overall budget.
We also updated the bathrooms outside of security to match the ones added during the 2019 addition. The remodeled bathrooms have a modern design, eco-friendly fixtures, and upgraded lighting.
With the latest update, passengers traveling in and out of the Sheridan County Airport now have a streamlined and modern experience.
